Inhalations

Indirect – refers to vaporising or ‘burning’ essential oils in an open space. This method is an effective way to deal with emotions and negative states of mind such as stress and depression.  It is also useful as an air-antiseptic for the room of someone who’s sick and/or convalescing.

Direct – refers to inhaling the essential oil by simply smelling it from the bottle or from a few drops placed on a hanky or tissue.  This method is specifically useful for the treatment of respiratory related conditions such as nasal congestion due to common cold, sinusitis, hay fever and headaches. It is also useful for restlessness, insomnia and stress related conditions.

Steam – refers to inhaling the essential oils from over a bowl of hot, steaming water.  This method is recommended for the treatment of respiratory related conditions, such as nose congestion due to common cold, sinusitis, sore throat, cough and influenza.  However, it is best to be avoided if the person suffers from asthma.
