Aromatherapy is the modern name given to the ancient practice of healing and improving health using concentrated pure plant extracts found in herbs, flowers, fruits and the bark, roots or resin of some trees.  These extracts, revered for their fragrance and therapeutic value, are known as essential oils.  They not only give a plant its signature scent, they also contain numerous complex chemicals that account for the many therapeutic actions they have.  In this way, the chemical make-up of an essential oil determines the properties it has.  Thus, while some may promote relaxation and a general sense of well-being and balance, others stimulate and rejuvenate.  In addition, most oils have physical benefits and they all are natural healers.

While mostly used with great success and delight, essential oils are not perfect and safety is of fundamental importance to the practice of aromatherapy.  Understanding the beneficial and hazardous effects and properties of essential oils forms a fundamental part of training to become a qualified Aromatherapist.

What is Aromatherapy?

There are many ways to experience the benefits of essential oils, which involve either breathing in the aromas or absorbing the diluted oils through your skin.  The following are just some of the ways that essential oils are used in the practice of Aromatherapy:

Application Methods

Come in and discuss your health and wellbeing with a fully qualified Aromatherapist and find out how essential oils can provide you with a wide range of options for self-care.  Special blends created and designed for your unique tastes and needs.

Aromatherapy Facial

An Aromatherapy facial will cleanse and purify your skin from impurities that produce a dull complexion, giving it a freshness and full bloom of beauty thanks to the powerful and unparalleled healing properties of essential oils.

Beyond just their delightful aroma, an Aromatherapist focuses on using essential oils for their therapeutic actions on the body, such as expectorant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, relaxant and so on.  During the consultation, a case history is taken to determine exactly what form the treatment should take; compresses, shoulder or back massage; home treatment or a full body Aromatherapy Massage.  The therapist will be aware of many characteristics in the client; using questions and observation to discover anything out of balance or different from what’s expected.  Through listening, supporting, encouraging, the therapist helps clients to become aware of how or why they became ill, so they can make their own decisions and recognise how they can help themselves.

The therapist will then apply their knowledge to prescribe a treatment that takes account of the application method, appropriate dilutions, safety, contraindications and the therapeutic actions of the individual essential oils as well as their synergy when used together.  Much thought is put into the blend, which is individually tailored to a client’s needs – be they mental, emotional or physical or, more often than not, a combination.
